What if you didn’t need more discipline?

Discipline is an important skill to cultivate. But it’s not the only skill. And it’s not the only solution when you’re feeling unmotivated.

I hear so many people say, “I just need to be more disciplined.”

But what if “more discipline” wasn’t the answer? What if what you really needed was variety, creativity, or play?

Instead of forcing yourself to complete a task that no longer holds your attention or interest, go for a walk, get some fresh air, draw, dance, wash the dishes… and come back to it later with refreshed energy.

Or don’t. Maybe, by stepping away, you’ll create the space needed to re-evaluate.

Maybe you’ll find that this task would be better completed by someone else. Maybe you’ll decide it doesn’t need to be completed at all. Maybe you’ll uncover a completely new approach that brings ease and simplicity.  Maybe the joy of it will return!

What if you honored what you needed in this moment instead of forcing yourself to be more disciplined? How might that affect your relationship with yourself?
