A New New Year’s Resolution
Each year, instead of setting New Year’s resolutions, I choose one word as my guide and focus. It’s a resolution based on who I want to become instead of what I want to accomplish. It’s simple, powerful, and comes from the heart.
This tradition began in 2013 when my dad introduced me to the book One Word That Will Change Your Life. My siblings have always teased me about being his favorite child, but I believe sharing traditions like this is what has strengthened our relationship over time. (See his inscription in my copy of the book above.)
That first year, my word was “Brighten.” I wanted to bring more positivity and confidence into my life. Brighten became an important reminder to stand a little taller and turn my attention toward the light.
The book outlines a process to help you discover your One Word – or, more accurately, to help your One Word find you. As the authors say, “Our formula is not rooted in our strength and resolve, but in surrender and simplicity.” A few of my most recent and transformative examples are 2020: Let Go, 2021: Nourish, and 2022: Inspire.
In a few weeks, I’ll share my One Word for 2023 and my intentions behind it. In the meantime, I encourage you to explore the One Word concept for yourself! You can find additional resources at the book’s website.
Gratitude on and for the journey.
