Stop Outsourcing Your Knowing

This powerful phrase – “outsourcing your knowing” - has been mentioned by Rob Bell in numerous RobCast episodes. It describes a familiar habit in my life… one that I’m working to change.

For me, outsourcing my knowing can look like:

  • Putting my future opportunities and vision in the hands of someone else

  • Constantly quoting the voices of others without recognizing that they reflect something I already know to be true

  • Polling other people’s opinions or wanting others to make decisions for me

  • Seeking advice and feedback without running it through any of my personal filters

These habits may have served me as a young person and professional, and there are still seasons when it’s valuable to lean on the experience and expertise of others. But I’m learning to do so without discrediting MY personal experience and expertise along the way.

Notice the impact that outsourcing your knowing has on your self-trust, confidence, and sense of empowerment. What might happen if you didn’t shy away from your knowledge and expertise? In what areas of your life do you need to own and trust your wisdom?
