New Year, New You!
We'll soon be heading into “New Year, New You” season.
I know this concept has had its fair share of pushback lately. I understand the phrase “new you” can carry with it feelings of not-enough-ness.
But I’m all in on “New Year, New Me!”
And let me explain why… it’s a matter of language…
I recently learned that, in the ancient language of Greece, you would find two words for our English word “new.”
“Neos” - meaning new in the sense of “more recent in time” and
“Kainos” - meaning “new in quality, different in nature from the old”
When I think about the new year, I naturally think about it in relation to time. I’m defining “new” in this case much like “neos.”
However, when I think about a new me, I think about it in relation to all the previous me’s. This doesn’t mean I’m shaming or discrediting any previous version of myself or the person I am today. Instead, I feel excited about the unlimited amount of possibility that the future holds. I feel inspired by the ways I will continue to learn, grow, and evolve in the days, weeks, and years ahead. So, in this case, I’m defining “new” more like “kainos.”
While it’s not NEARLY as catchy… my hope is that when you hear “New Year, New You” in the coming weeks, you join me in interpreting it like “Neos Year, Kainos You.”
If you’re unsure where to start in your “New You” journey, I’ve put together a resource guide listing the four tools that have had the greatest and most lasting impact on my personal development.
